More information on foreclosures, tax preparation help

Check out www.mabuhayalliance.org for free information about foreclosure prevention and free tax preparation. This is a non-profit group dedicated to empowering the Filipino community and they have a lot of information which is useful for small business owners.

Union Tribune special report

Today is Sunday, March 22,2009 and there is an article in the San Diego Union about how many Filipino families trying to avoid foreclosure in San Diego were victimized by felon-run trusts. In the article is a reference to some of the resources available for free mortgage counselling and a list on How to Avoid a Scam.

Please be careful, kababayans.

Upcoming events in San Diego

I met a friend of mine in the library and she is involved in the Kundirana performance coming up in May at the Escondido Performing Arts Center. More details later.

Also she was recently in the Philippines and was able to get going a small, small resource center (books, maps, etc) set up in a barrio. My cousin also sends a balikbayan box full of pencils, crayons, stationery and school supplies to a barrio in the Visayas. If you are like me I had tons of these lying around the house when my kids were growing up and I still have a super-abundance of them which I could really spare and send to kids who could use them.  Another friend sends globes so that the kids have a sense of our world. I have this project in mind of sending the puzzle globes that come in a box which I saw in a bookstore.

I hope this website can gather all these information:  upcoming events, projects to help our kababayans, and as a post suggested perhaps stories about our eateries in the area.

Another 24 hour dig

I went to Pacific Beach this Sunday and had a chance to return to Roberto’s at the corner of Mission Blvd. across Belmont Park.  I ordered the Flying Saucer —- very good!! and the price was right. I saw that this is open 24 hours daily. That makes four on our list of places that are open until the wee hours of the morning — including the Studio Diner on Ruffin Rd , and during the week-end, Conching’s in National City and Royal Thai at the Gaslamp  Quarter.

Websites for learning Tagalog and about the culture

I recently found two excellent sites: www.seasite.niu.edu  and also www.globalpinoy.com. I will try compile a list of good ones. I also have been following www.livinginthephilippines.com mainly for information about how much it would take to live in  the philippines

Terrific ice cream

We, San Diego Filipinos are really lucky. We have access to the following ice cream flavors: mais-queso, macapuno-ube, buko pandan, cashew-langka, avocado and mango. Yummy.  Come warmer weather let’s all head out to Conching’s.

Conching’s Friday night

Yes!! we made it to Conching’s and at 9:45 in the evening  we were able to order from the Midnight Grill and had a heaping portion of the TLT (tapa, longganisa and tocino) served with Conching’s signature yellow rice and two eggs. What a treat and the price was right! There was a large group of teens who came in as were eating. We are hoping to  return again and at a later time even if it took us about a 45 minute drive. Well worth it!!  Also I saw that the Royal Thai in the Gaslamp Quarter is open until 3:00am.  Good for San
Diegans,  there are more and more places open very late. I wish someone would catalogue them somewhere so we can know more about these places.

Friday night out in the South Bay

Tonight my husband and I will head out to Chula Vista about a forty-minute drive from our North County home. It is always a pleasure to head south and be in the thick of Filipino life in San Diego. I am hoping we get a chance to go to the bakery that sells the Obama Pan de Sal which someone concocted during the campaign.

We will also catch a late-night dinner at Conching’s which is open until the wee hours of the morning  —- good for those who have been out partying and need some pinoy food before heading home.

Conching’s is one of the few places in San Diego that has this service. None in our neck of the woods. We drove up to the Studio Diner on Ruffin Road after finishing a movie, Slumdog Millionaire at Edward’s in Mira Mesa at 9:45PM last Saturday. It stays open 24/7  The place was packed and there was a long waiting line.

Call for interview subjects

Is there ayone out there who would be interested in helping out two researchers from the University of California? One study is about the experiences of migrants who went to another country or other countries before settling in the USA. Since I was first a student in Canada before I came here I qualified for the study. It was a good chance for under an hour to recall a lot of my experiences. The second study is about the work that you do for the Filipino  and Filipino-American community here in San Diego. I am getting ready to answer the questions which were emailed to me. I think answering them will be a real eye opener for me on why I do what I do.

Beautiful days in San diego

Warmer weather is coming back slowly but surely and we wish everyone better health especially for so many of us who got infected and coughed (or are still coughing) our way through several weeks of wet and cold times. I am trying to get a handle on this blogsite, still learning the ropes and would appreciate your contributions. I really thank a couple of people who have responded. First, Ivan, please check out his graphic design business in Mira Mesa and two inquiries we received using the site. One was on finding out more information on Fred Sabater, Filipino artist and another from a UC Berkeley historian who is doing a study on community participation in San Diego. Off to a slow start but a sure start.
